My Two Cents on Cigar Smoking for Newbies

Are you new to cigar smoking? Are you unsure of which cigars to buy at The Gent's Place? You'll hear your cigar aficionado friends tell you which ones are "the best" based on where they're from, how long they're aged, how rare they are, and how well they complement their favorite whisky or rum. But, don't be surprised when you take your first puff of their highly acclaimed cigar to find out that it may not be all that great. Why? I guess choosing a good smoke when you first start smoking is sort of like finding your right beer when you first start drinking. Taking advice on what to start out smoking from a seasoned cigar smoker can be compared to taking advice on what beer is best to drink for your first time from an old German guy that's been drinking beer for 60 years and only drinks "the hard stuff." Could you imagine chugging a Guinness Stout or Sam Adams Utopias as your first taste of beer? You may have hated beer forever!

We suggest starting out with a milder cigar like a Montecristo #2. This is a cigar to be savored; slow-burning, packed with rich, creamy, and complex flavors and flawless construction. Then, work up to a full-bodied and spicy Ashton VSG Tres Mystique after you've got a few cigars under your belt. You may find that the mild cigars are perfect for you (think Corona) or you may find that "the hard stuff" (think Guiness Stout) is right up your ally. Either way, remember you're not any more macho smoking on either end of the strength spectrum.
