2010 Haircut Trends

2010 has seen a revival of more classic men’s hair cuts and styles, but with a modern twist. A few of the current trends we’ve seen:

Bangs: Justin Bieber aside, we’ve noticed a variety of lengths for men’s bangs, often accompanied by shorter back and sides. Bangs might be longer and side-swept, or tousled and textured.

Slicked Back: The dapper, Mad Men-esque slicked-back look is making a return in modern fashion. This classic style requires the cut be longer on top and short on the sides. Men are wearing this style both with a part and without.

Classic Part: The classic part brings to mind old Hollywood screen legends like Cary Grant, and is worn both side-swept and slicked back.

Poker Tournament Recap

We just wanted to give everyone a big thanks for supporting the Sickle Cell Anemia charity last Sunday. We ended up raising over $1000 for the children to have a memorable holiday experience this year. We gave out over $3500 in prizes and I feel like the event was a great success. My Two Cents on Cigar Smoking for Newbies

Are you new to cigar smoking? Are you unsure of which cigars to buy at The Gent's Place? You'll hear your cigar aficionado friends tell you which ones are "the best" based on where they're from, how long they're aged, how rare they are, and how well they complement their favorite whisky or rum. But, don't be surprised when you take your first puff of their highly acclaimed cigar to find out that it may not be all that great. Why? I guess choosing a good smoke when you first start smoking is sort of like finding your right beer when you first start drinking. Taking advice on what to start out smoking from a seasoned cigar smoker can be compared to taking advice on what beer is best to drink for your first time from an old German guy that's been drinking beer for 60 years and only drinks "the hard stuff." Could you imagine chugging a Guinness Stout or Sam Adams Utopias as your first taste of beer? You may have hated beer forever!

We suggest starting out with a milder cigar like a Montecristo #2. This is a cigar to be savored; slow-burning, packed with rich, creamy, and complex flavors and flawless construction. Then, work up to a full-bodied and spicy Ashton VSG Tres Mystique after you've got a few cigars under your belt. You may find that the mild cigars are perfect for you (think Corona) or you may find that "the hard stuff" (think Guiness Stout) is right up your ally. Either way, remember you're not any more macho smoking on either end of the strength spectrum.

The Gent's Place just added a new perk for its loyal members and clients, "The Gents Cigar Patio." I was thinking about why the cigar patio is so cool and came up with the following ways we can put this thing to good use:
For our cigar guys, a place to enjoy a smoke with your friends before or after your service
For our foul-mouthed guys, a place where you can say whatever the hell you want without any worry that a woman or child will think differently of you
For the guy that just needs to "get away from it all", a place where you can complain about women, kids, and work without anyone judging you and around guys that will likely completely agree with you and add fuel to the fire (this could be dangerous)
For the work-aholic, a place where you can get free wi-fi 7 days a week without having to buy a cup of coffee. Just ask the front desk for the password.
For everyone else, it's just another place at Frisco's "mancave" where guys can network and BS without having to give up their MAN cards. Enjoy!

The Art of Manliness is quite possibly one of the best "manly" blogs out there on the net and is definitely my personal favorite. In fact, you may have noticed some of their blog posts laying around the bar at the shop from time to time. The blog covers a plethra of topics on how to be the best man that you can be: anything from how to give a manly handshake, how to be a great Godfather, wardrobe recommendations, money management advice, and numerous other tips and insights on how to live your life to the fullest. I also appreciate the historical wisdom and insights from some of our founding fathers, especially the posts on Benjamin Franklin. The Art of Manliness has amassed quite a following (over 45,000 subscribers) and you can imagine the honor of receiving a phone call today from Brett McKay, founder of the blog.
